Covering with gummer tape one side of some leaves of veneer before cutting to size for marquetry scroll sawing packet. The reason is to stiffen the veneer before cutting into small pieces and handling for sand shading and assembly. After putting the motif together, the entire show side will be covered with another layer of gummed tape.

Of course the leaves are curling towards the dried gummed tape even though between pieces of plywood or mdf while the tape dries. Tried wetting the paper tape side the next day and drying under light weight, all but one looked fairly flat today. Will see tomorrow how they respond after removing the weight for several hours.

Would love to have them flat before cutting into smaller pieces and building the scroll saw packet. Has anyone else encountered this, and have a solution?

I find that gum taped veneer surfaces put under pressure soon after gum taping is done and using a bit of heat from a heating blanket, will help in the flattening process. The smaller pieces cut out for marquetry should not be a problem, since when reassembled into the full pattern and have the second layer of tape on it, will allow the skin flatten a bit easier.

Thanks Yoda. My mistake may have been gum taping large pieces of veneer, to cut out the small sizes needed later, rather than just the sizes I needed. Wetting and pressing again helped, and for the remaining one or two uncooperative ones I'll put under a heating blanket for a bit.

Next time I'll just gum tape the sizes I need.
