I have a project, part of which involves an 18' radiused crown, approx. 8' L X 6" H with two nesting pieces attached. The question is whether to go my usual route of using 3/8" bending ply and face veneering, or to resaw red oak, sand to 3/16" - 1/8". I am afraid the yield on resawing 6" red oak into 1/4" slices may not be very good, with a possibility of a lot of waste. I would run the 1/4" material through a thickness sander, but it may be a costly mistake to use solid material vs. the predictability of bending ply.

Well, I would vote for the bending ply route. It skips all the resawing and bending ply holds the radius much better without so many laminations. As long as you dont have to worry about seeing the bending ply from the edge thats the way I would go.

If you can find in your area, another option would be 1/8" "italian poplar" bending ply. When I used the 3/8" "wacky wood" bending ply, it tended to facet rather than bend smoothly. Granted, you'd have to laminate 3 layers of the 1/8" to get the same thickness, but it might yield a better result. I was able to find the 1/8" at Distributor Services Inc (DSI).
