I need some finishing advice. I am really happy with getting the veneer onto these profiled pool table rails. After sanding, I checked with mineral spirits and the wood looked really good as far as splotches, scratches etc. So I applied General Finishes High Performance water based polyurethane.

I found some of the pieces have an uneven finish. I am guessing because I hand sanded, instead of the trusted old random orbit sander.

So, am I just too picky and should I just be happy with what I have? Or should I sand down and try again? Different finish such as Danish oil?

Thanks in advance, Carl

Could you describe the materials used (raw veneer? adhesive?) and the process (Gluing and clamping? Sanding schedule? Finishing schedule?)

Is the finish uneven because some of the pores are filled and some open, or because some areas look dry, or the sheen is not consistent?

The substrate is the original 40 year old particle board, it had been covered with a plastic laminate. After removing the plastic laminate, I used mineral spirits and a scraper, and then sandpaper to remove the old glue. Then I used Durhams Rock Hard Water Putty to fill the defects.

To apply the veneer, I used the green Unibond 800, in the vacuum press. I had a small amount of bleed through which seemed to sand away quickly. Sanding was 100,150,220, all by hand since I was in fear of a sand through with the random orbit sander.

After sanding, I blew off the sawdust with compressed air, checked the condition with mineral spirits. After the spirits dried, I applied the poly with a foam brush
