Subject : Stacking Veneered Asseemblies in the Bag

This is a basic practice question: When putting 4 identical (3 ply)laminations in the vacuum bag, one could place them one thick (3 ply) in four different places, or all four on top of each other (12 ply).

The question becomes: Is the clamping pressure the same in either arrangement? If it is say, 18lbs per sq inch, then is it not the same no matter how many plies there are? Or does it divide in a stack, so the number of plies will lessen the effective PSI on a panel?

I can argue it either way, being the argumentative sort. But I prefer to know the answer, with no argument.

Dave,

The pressure is the same, stacked or spread out. I always stack when the panels are the same size. The only time stacking would be different is if a panel is extremely warped and stiff. The panel below would receive less pressure due to the resistance in the warped one above. This is unlikely to come into play because I would never use a substrate that would be that bad.

Thanks. That is pretty much the way I had if figured, but I always had a suspicion it could be wrong. As we all know, this work can be humbling - I prefer to limit those experiences as much as possible.

Flatness does play a role, I understand. Just as in solid wood, where more clamps may be employed to bring those surfaces into 'intimate contact'.

Thanks again,

Dave S
