Need advice for veneering a curved surface in my vacuum press. Most of the instructions I've read pertain to larger curved surfaces but I am veneering a small surface. I am building several music boxes the sides of which are only about 2+ inches high, are flat on the inside and have an outer radius of 1+". My first attempt involved just placing the side pieces with the flat side down and letting the bag wrap around the curved top side. Not too smart because the bag did not wrap all the way around near the bottom of the curved surface. Then read that I should have placed the piece on a piece of scrap so the bag would wrap completely around the radius. That seemed to work okay but I was concerned about not using a caul between the piece and the bag. Darryl seems to stress the use of cauls in his instructions that came with my press.
Would appreciate any advice on pressing these small pieces. Are cauls always necessary? Is there a better way than my use of scrap to raise the piece so the bag would wrap?
