I would like to veneer a 17 by 50 inch table top I am making. The rectangular veneer would have a contrasting color elliptical veneer inlaid in it. I am looking for references to techniques for cutting the elliptical hole in the rectangular veneer and cutting the elliptical male to fit into it.

Thanks

Howard

Howard,

First you will need an accurate template . Should be made from 1/2 mdf.

Second is a good 1 inch chisel with a 1/8 honed radius on the edge.

Once those are set, align the mdf template where you want it, making sure that the template is on the glue side of the field veneer. proceed to trim out the elliptical negative

Now put the template on the face side of the inlay veneer and trim out the elliptical positive.

The reason for trimming the field veneer from the glue side is due to the bevel on the chisel.

Also draw reference lines on both veneers so you have accurate alignment when inserting the inlay.

Howard:
Craig's method is very similar to what I was taught. The only difference is that I would first cut out the ellipse, and then carefully use it as the cutting pattern for the background veneer. Of course, this is easiest cutting from the show side both times. Assemble a sample sheet or two from inexpensive veneer and try the process first on scrap.
I draw the ellipse using a CAD program, then tape a printout on the veneer and cut through both. If you're uncomfortable with the chisel idea, you can use a scalpel/exacto/utility knife, but it's amazing how well a property sharpened wide chisel works for this.
