Anytime you want to use the iron on technique it really should never be used on raw veneer, especially when there are seams. You probably know that I am no fan of this method and would never recommend using it. If someone does not have a press or has an unusual situation where a press cant be used I would suggest hot hide glue over the iron on technique. Working with hide glue is a good skill to develop for any woodworker using veneer. The only time I'm willing to use this iron on method is for edges where its just a narrow strip of veneer. Even then clamping would be better.
Although some PVA's dry harder than others, (I did a post on this subject back in February called "PVA Glue Hardness Testing" none of them cure rigid like a urea or epoxy glue, period. True rigid glues require a full chemical reaction. No PVA glue does this. I dont think there is anything wrong with using a PVA glue for veneering but just be clear what you are getting as well as what you are not getting.
