Subject : Flexibility: 1/8 BB vs Ital Bend Poplar

Anyone have any experience comparing the flexibility of 1/8" baltic birch and italian bending poplar plywoods? The application would be a chair seat which remains flat across its width but has a gentle front downward lip, and at the rear curves to vertical at perhaps a 4.5" radius.
Thanks.

Don,

1/8" baltic birch is pretty stiff, especially compared to italian bending poplar. With a 4.5" radius I think you will need to use the bending poplar.

Do you have both that you can do tests with?

Don, I used three layers of 1/8" BB for a curved table base and I was surprised how much effort it took to bend it over the form. The rad for mine was around 24" so the press did pull it in smoothly, but I think that last 4.5" rad in your project could be a problem.
