Subject : Sheet material for skateboard decks.

I want to make up some large skateboard type decks. They will be about 2 feet wide by about 42 inches long. they will have camber to them in the long dimension and some flip up at the edges. They will also have flip tails at either end.(maybe) The total thickness wants to be around 1/2 thick as they need to flex a little. I will build a form shaped to the correct shape out of rigid building insulation and use a caul on top of the wood ply. My problem is finding thinner sheet goods to use as the plys. The thinnest sheet goods I can find at the box stores is 1/4" thick. (1/4" birch plywood) This is too thick to bend and I need more than two layers for it to hold its shape. If I go with regular veneer the only thing I can find is 1/40th of an inch wood veneer and it is too thin and fragile. It tears and requires too many layers. What I really need is a sheet good that is about 1/8 inch thick with maybe 2 or so plys. Is there anything out there that fits the bill. I thought about taking the 1/4 birch ply and putting it through the planer to reduce it to 1/8" . It seems like a waste of material. What do skateboard builders use to get those 1/2 decks, pressed with curves and and about 1/2" final dimension? They seem to have many plys to them also. I know a lot of people build custom skateboard decks.

scott,

i've helped my son make some decks, and we used 1/8" ply. the 1/8" ply should be available at lumber yards or plywood specialty places. we used 3 "layers" which allowed for some flex. on a longer board, however, i did break the deck, granted i was trying to wheel a large television down stairs on the board! lesson learned...maybe for longer boards, try 4 layers??? One thing i've wanted to do, but my son hasn't made a deck for some time now, is to use the fine wood veneers to create the faces of the decks.

can you tell me a little about the forms that you make? what is this "rigid building insulation", where do you get it, and how are you shaping it?

hope this helps...

the standard material is usually 1/16TH maple veneer.
