How long has vacuum pressing been around? I'm assuming the theory has been around for quite some time, but was limited by the bag or affordable pump technology? I am going to give a short presentation about vacuum pressing for a college course I'm taking, and want to give some background information. I appreciate any info you can give.

TIA,
Rick

Rick,

I'm not a vacuum veneering historian but my general understanding is it began somewhere in the 30's. I think the aircraft industry was the first common use of vacuum pressing.

I'll tell an interesting story. Back at one of the first trade shows we ever did a very old wizened man shuffled up to my booth giving the bag a couple of good slaps saying how he developed this technology in the early 40's in Germany for his cabinet shop. He went on to say how he was planning to put it on the market, just like me, but Hitler put him in a concentration camp and he lost everything he had. At least he didn't loose his life too.

You might look for references in the Manual of Wood Veneering by Lincoln. I think it's mentioned in the book somewhere.
