Subject : 1/8" bending ply as caul?

I am gluing two ply cherry face veneers over a 2 X 3/8" bending ply ( 3/4" ) core, 16' radius, 42" L X 25" W. The core faces are pretty clean, but I have had better luck with a caul vs. just the bag. I am thinking of one or two pieces of 1/8" bending ply as a caul. Would one piece be enough to give uniform pressure?

Tim,

16' radius is almost straight, in the amount of width you're gluing up, so you could probably even use 1/4" melamine for a caul. Just test it to see how easy it conforms to the form. I've used the 3/8 bending ply as a caul for as tight as 7" radius.

I believe the 1/8" would be better than no caul, but prefer something thicker.

I normally use 1/4" vinyl-coated mdf as a caul, and it will bend to even a 20" radius. Urea resin sticks to this stuff much less than to melamine or any other coated panel product I've found so I'm able to re-use cauls over and over. And it's inexpensive. For tighter radiuses, I have used 1/8" bending ply wrapped in plastic and have not had any problems whatsoever.

I don't think you should ever press without a caul, as you're just asking for problems.
