I veneered a square, 24 inches on the side, with a 5 inch contrasting circle in the center. The circle was held in place with 2 layers of veneer tape around its circumference. I good a good bond every ware except on the circular piece.
Is it possible that the MFD platen bridged the circular piece due to the ring of veneer tape?

thanks

Howard

It sounds like you may have had a little to much veneer tape on your circle and it left a void prior to pressing. when the vacuum was applied it bowed your top caul and you had some un-even pressing.

If you used pva glue you can use a hot iron to reactivate the glue and press it flat. moisten the veneer a little before applying the hot iron.

I dont know if that will work if you used urea resin glue.

When you press panels with uneven surfaces try using rigid foam as a top caul.

It sounds like there was uneven pressure applied. Since the veneer tape added to the thickness only in the areas around the circumference, too much pressure was applied there and the glue was squeezed out from this area.

One solution for pressing uneven thicknesses is to use a layer of canvas under the top caul. So, starting from the veneer, and going up, I would have a) the veneer, b) a sheet of plastic (to prevent gluing the veneer to the next layer, c) a sheet of canvas, and d) the top caul (the MDF that you used on top).
