What would be the easiest way to cut veneeer to make a 16 piece-of-pie tabletop? The diameter will be appx 26" I want the grain on each slice of the pie to run from the outside of the circle to the point in the middle. Most of the ideas I've had make me wonder if the veneer will chipout during cutting. And I wonder how to make it all come together perfectly in the center, the outside, and be flat? Do I use a very carefully constructed template of one piece to cut them all? I may alternate light and dark colors of veneer, or I may not. Your thoughts on cutting and piecing it? Thanks! Paul

Paul,

Take a look at this earlier thread on this forum:

http://www.vacupress.com/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=16714&MessageID=34136#34136

(Cut-and-paste that link into your browser.)

The first post in that thread references Don Stephan's great compilation of information from this forum. Included in the document is information regarding what you are trying to do.

There are other sources available also, including Darryl Keil's and Paul Schürch's videos.

Good luck,

Charles

the most important consideration is that you have flat veneer to start with.

If its not flat your sure to have problems.

The first cut you make should be from the outside of your veneer to the inside edge or small point. your second cut will be from the small point to the outside edge. this will eliminate the tear out on the small point.

As for assembly ... some guys assemble and cut the pieces exactly . then assemble the pieces and custom fit piece number 16.

I assemble mine in two halves. my templets are not exact. they are .05mm over the exact size or for example 22.5 is 22.505. this way I end up with two halve's that are a little bigger than the exact radius. I then lay the two halves on top of each other and trim both on the center line at one time then tape the two halves together.

Yes... one template should be used to cut all you pie sections ( refered to as a "radial match" top or "sunburst". if you do not book match each leaf, and instead slip match, this is considered a "pinwheel" design.

magnifying glasses are essential to line up the center points(the kind you wear). at least they are for me.

depending on what kind of veneer you use be on the lookout for "pattern jump" flat cut veneers and cathedral grained veneers can change drastically is as few as 8 sheets . really dense rotary cut burls such as walnut are the best for radial matches as its hard to pick up pattern jump .
