I've recently used a 'reconstituted quartered cherry' veneer from Formwood veneer co. and have had disasterous results with their paper backed product. This veneer is similar or the same as Brookside's Brookline medium cherry veneer. ( made in Italy)
We used a vacupress bag and Titebond cold press veneer glue on both raw unbacked veneer and paper backed over mdf. The raw veneer has held up fairly well to finishing ( minor, barely visable checking on some panels)but the paper backed has buckled, cracked and pulled away from the paper and/ or itself after being finished with Sherwin Williams pre-cat lacquer. ( this finish has been used by us for years under the same conditions without any problems).
Has anyone else out there had any experience with this type of man made veneer? And if so any problems like this?
Thanks very much for any help,
Frank Thomas

I've used paperbacked, but not a lot and not enough to have a good track record.

I don't recall who manufactured the paperbacked that I used, but it worked great. I like the fact that I don't have to worry about bleed-through.

Sorry I can't help. I usually don't do large and wide pressings...more decorative and marquetry...which doesn't really require huge sheets where paperbacked would be an advantage.

No experience, but a suggestion to start an investigation. First, did the problems occur after the gluing, or only after the finish was applied? Any chance of pressing with a different combination of glue and finish? Does the solvent for that finish, if applied to the "reconstituted veneer" without finishing, unglued and glued, produce similar results?

With that info, I'd contact the manufacturer and explain your results.

Switching to a urea formaldehyde glue may eliminate both sets of problems if that type of glue can be used.
