Subject : Cutting Circles in veneer ??

What method have y'all found to cut circles in veneer? I am talking about 3, 4, or 5 inch in diameter.
Do you glue it up to a substrate first then cut them?
I would like to be able to cut some circles for a table design. But I dont want to invest 4 or 5 hundred dollars in a good scroll saw. I just wont use it enough to justify the cost.

Thanks
Dave

You could use a pattern with your scalpel to cut a circle. To make the pattern, you could draw circle of specified size in MS Word and many other programs, print, attach to chipboard (the cardboard at the back of a pad of paper) with spray adhesive. Cut out with the scapel, fine tune with sandpaper if needed. Tape to the veneer with blue masking tape and trace part way around until cut through. Tape across the cut and continue . . . I don't tape to a substrate when cutting.

Using a drawing compass, you could draw circles of any size and make the pattern . . .

At one point, I attached a scalpel to a trammel.

It really didn't work, because the scalpel blade will flex.

So instead, I used a trammel with a veneer chisel attached. Works great.

Another option is to use a router on a circle cutting jig to make your substrate a perfect circle.

Then attach your veneer oversized.

Press the panel with the veneer face down so that you don't ruin the edges.

Then trim with a flush-trim bit.

Or...really it's not that tough to do it by hand, like Don suggests.
