I’m building a small mechanical veneer press and trying to figure out the maximum space I can have between the pressure bars. I have been gradually widening the space between the bars and making sample pressings.

Am I correct in assuming that if a spacing results in bleed thru of the adhesive there is sufficient pressure to get a good bond?

The one comment I would make is that the distance between pressure bars might depend in part on the thickness of the caul between the pressure bars and the veneer? I know that when using hand clamps, it is suggested that the pressure "cone" extends from the clamp heads at 45 degrees to each side, and that the clamps should be close enough to each other so that these pressure cones at least touch, ideally overlap slightly. For a veneer press, that might also depend in part on how stiff the caul is: the pressure bars likely could be further apart if the caul is 3/4" steel than if 3/4" plywood?

Just some thoughts.

I think Don covered the basics. I would like to add that bleed through doesn't necessarily mean the press is built correctly. You could have uneven pressure and still get plenty of bleed through. Its a combination of enough pressure and uniform pressure that yields good pressing results.
