Subject : laminating/veneering -differences?

I just discovered this site and it's impressive and very informative. However, I can't ssem to find answers to my questions. Namely, when does veneering become lamination and what changes in the process?

My situation is this, I would like to resaw 1/8 or 3/16" slices of quilted maple, glue to a 3/8" or possibly 1/4" substrate of maple. Object, a 22" by 20" panel (several acctualy). I intend to use cauls and clamps, no press.

Questions: do I treat this the same as if I were laminating 2 half inch bords together or as a veneering operation with all of the considerations posted in this fine site?

Regards,

George

George,

Anytime you glue veneer on top of solid its really laminating not veneering. By definition veneering is wood cut thin enough that glue and a stable, non-moving substrate can overcome the natural expansion and contraction of the veneer.

When you glue a veneer, or any thickness wood for that matter, onto another piece of solid wood everything expands and contracts together. Whether its 1/16" thick or 1" it really doesn't matter as long as the grain of all layers are running in the same direction.

Because you want to glue solid on top of solid you are not bound by the general restrictions that apply to veneering.

Hope this explanation helps.

Darryl

Darryl,

Thank you. I would have guessed it was the case but your confirmation helps. Unlike in finishing, the long term affects for samples would be problematic.
