Subject : bubble vs mdf bulge?

A customer asked me to refinish a tabletop I built several years ago, and one of the problems he mentioned is a "bubble". I have yet to examine table closely. The "bubble" is about 1/2" diameter and is right along a joint where I put two halves of the tabletop together. I can usually spot a veneer bubble by tapping on the surface and listening for that telltale "tic tic" sound of a void beneath the veneer. If that's it, I'll just inject some glue and clamp it to repair. However, from the one quick look I've had at this, I'm concerned that I might have a bulge in the mdf core, likely due to moisture penetration. I don't really know how I'd approach that repair. Any suggestions, my friends? Thanks so much!!!

Richard,

If you really have a raise in the MDF there really isn't a easy fix for this one. From your description of its size I would be surprised if it was the MDF as water would tend to be absorbed in and swell over a larger area than the small one you describe. Also, the glue creates a barrier on the substrate which should prevent moisture absorption into the MDF. I could be wrong though. Are there any water marks in the finish?

Let us know what your diagnosis is after you have inspected it closer.

Darryl

Thanks, Darryl,

I made a small incision in the veneer, used a hypo syringe, and it appeared as though I got a little glue under the veneer. I clamped a block down onto it with a wax paper barrier, and after curing, it seems to be improved somewhat. It is however, still raised a little bit. I have been toying with the notion of placing something over the raised area and very very carefully popping it with a hammer. Ever tried anything like that?

Thanks again,
