I'm working out the design paramters for a desk. It will (or would like to...) span, without support, about 5'. Assume the desk will have people lean on it and the like. From my reading of the forum, I think 1/4" skins on 1" honeycomb? Or does the honeycomb need to be thicker (i.e. 2x1/2 or 3/4)? Or can I get away with 3/4"...

Paul,

You will probably be OK with the 1" honeycomb. A double layer is even stronger, like two 1/2" or 3/4" honeycomb with a separator sheet of, lets say 1/8" ply, in between.

Care to be our volunteer to develop some test results on honeycomb and skin thickness vs strength?

I made a 4x8 auxillary assemble table top by covering 3/4" honeycomb with 1/4" plywood on each side. With sawhorse supports about 6' apart there is some sag in the middle with perhaps 5 pounds of downward force in the middle. VERY unscientific but if you want great stiffness I'd consider a double layer of honeycomb with 1/4" ply between if that would be stiffer than thicker single layer of honeycomb.
