Subject : Best topcoat for a drybar counter

I am building a dry bar for a client. The counter top will have a decorative veneer pattern consisting of several different wood species. Some of these include open-grained woods like mahogany. The design will be as much of a visual show-piece, if not more, than a working counter. There will be lighting shining down from under the upper cabinets directly onto this counter. I have selected a satin finish so as to not highlight fingerprints and scratches.

I plan on finishing the top by a) sanding, b) sealing with dewaxed shellac, c) applying several coats of gloss topcoat, and d) applying a final coat of satin topcoat (with appropriate sanding in-between, of course).

My question is: What product is best suited for the topcoat in this application? I am after the highest quality available. And, I strongly prefer a water-borne product.

Also, should I consider a UV inhibitor so the natural wood colors do not fade over the years?

Thanks,

Charles

Charles,

if durability is what your after try polane polyurethane enamel. high solid content and one of the best finishes to use for bar tops dry or wet. if expense is not an issue try using ppg clear coat for automobiles. about 280 a gallon and 90 for the catalyst. no better uv protection than clear coat for automobiles.

sherwin williams is the distributor for polane. Sorry to say neither is water borne

Over the years I've been very satisfied with the water borne products I've purchased from Jeff Jewitt at www.homesteadfinishing.com.

Haven't had a chance yet to try the new lines (General and Enduro) he is carrying, but I've always found his recommendations rock solid. Just make sure the client doesn't intend to ever clean the surface with strong ammonia or strong bleach solutions.
