Subject : Vacuum pump doesn't shut off

I purchased the original (blue) vacuum pump about six or seven years ago and have done hundreds of flat-veneered panels, curved doors/panels, and various odd projects with great success. But for the past year or so the pump (set to auto-cycling) has not switched off after attaining max vacuum. When it gets there, if I tap it lightly with a screwdriver it shuts off. If I dial down the vacuum amount, the pump will shut off, but not if it's just dialed down--it is WHEN I'm turning the screw that it will shut down.

I live in NM, at about 7000ft above sea level, and the best the bag pulls down is about 21 hg, which it will usually keep (21-19) for about 30 min before needing to come on. but I've never had a problem with this (no delams, even with curved work under stress) The compressor makes about 10 scfm at 90 psi. If I've got something going, and there is enough drop in vacuum to kick the pump on, the compressor will kick on shortly after, but will catch up and shut off before the pump quits (pump doesn't quit without the screwdriver!?!), so I know the compressor is adequate.

This is not a terrible problem if I do a glue-up in the morning or mid-day, but it means I can't leave something in the bag overnight, because once the the pump kicks on it will run continuously and the compressor will be charging and recharging all night long, overworking/heating.

Darryl (Don...), I'm guessing you or someone can help me with this.
Please let me know, and thank you in advance.

Adam,

Over time the contacts that open and close in the switch begin to built up a ever so small teat on them and begin to weld together every time the switch makes contact. This welding is very slight and by hitting or fiddling with the switch the contacts break free and shut the pump off. Depending on how much the pump is used will depend on how long a switch will last. I suspect you are due for a new switch.

Darryl,
Funny thing--spent about an (excruciating) hour the other day disconnecting the vac and re-attaching it and fiddling and fiddling with the screw, and it started to shut off on its own. Jury is still out. Got a glue up to do tomorrow, so we shall see.

Thanks, as always, for getting back so soon, and for your help.
