Subject : Veneering leather over MDF?

I am veneering leather over a suitable 3/4" substrate for doors approx 15.75" X 65", , probably with urea resin. I cannot veneer the backside, so I will need to pray that things don't move too much. Any feedback would be much welcomed.

We had a thread similar to this question a little bit back.

http://www.vacupress.com/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=16364&MessageID=32564#32564

However, this discussion was regarding Shagreen, which is shark skin leather.

I would read through this thread, and treat your leather the same as we discussed the Shagreen. This thread should cover everything, if not...post again and we'll be happy to help out.

Good luck.

Tim,

I work with leather all the time. I think you will find that if you glue it with good old fashioned hot hide glue the results will be more than good. Size the MDF with a slightly thinner mix first and if it soaks in too much, apply a second after it dries. You actually want a bit of a "finish" look to the MDF before actually gluing. What happens is the glue size gives a surface for the glue to bond to rather than just soaking into, like when painting.

Apply a good solid coat quickly and then roll out the leather. Peel back a section and if the leather doesn't have enough glue, peel back 50% of the surface and re glue and repeat on the other 50% of the surface.

Take a clothes iron on rather low heat and through a cloth of some kind, like an old bed sheet, iron the leather lightly. Alow to dry a few hours.

It will never come off unless you want it too after that.

Hide Glue is a wonderful thing!

Cheers
Gary
