I use 1/2" Russian birch plywood for my substrates. Best I can find. Before I do any veneering usually the plywood will have a slight curl to it, maybe as much as 3/16" over a 20" span. The veneering doesn't change it. In final assemply I glue and screw the panel onto various frames and make adjustments to the frames if necessary so the plywood will go flat. What if anything do other people do about truly flat substrates?

Brent,

If its just a 1/2 inch panel why not use mdf? is there a structural reason your using plywood?

while I like russian birch ply because of the amount of plies it has, I only use it for drawer sides and bottoms or panels I know I am screwing to the wall.

If I intend to make a cabinet that requires a lot of hinges or holes and has a lot of dados I like lumber core plywood. Its always been more stable in my opinion.

What ever substrate you use allow it to acclimate to you enviroment

I recently bought 3/4" & they have 1/2" marine ply "okume" 7 ply for 87 bucks. I is almost as flat as mdf. On the downside it is very lightweight. I think even lighter than say basswood or poplar. I would guess it holds a screw about as good as pine.
