I'm a student in South Africa and have to manufacture a set of salad spoons. I only have a weeks time to produce them (they have to be finished on the 31 of July). I was hoping on using bamboo veneer, but any veneer product will also work. I have no idea how to use veneer, or form it into a spoon shape, do you have any advice or ideas? Is it possible to press veneer into a shape (and do i wet the veneer - how will it hold its form)?
Any help or advice, Please?

Liz,

I dont see any problem with using veneers to make a spoon. You may have to do only so many layers at a time but getting the veneer to compound bend shouldnt be too hard, its such a small item.

Do you have a vacuum press? If you do, then making only one mold would be the way to go. If you do not, then a mold on both sides will be required. You will need cork, rubber or felt to take up the variations you will get with two molds.

Do some playing around to get the feel of how it will work. For the most stable spoon make each layer of veneer go perpendicular to the previous one.

Sincerely

As Darryl said, the key is to experiment. Also, the shallower the bend the easier to make the veneer match the curve. Wetting the veneer may help it flex, but drying it out will take time.

This probably would be cheating, but could you glue a number of sheets of veneer together to make a rectangle 1/2" or whatever thickness needed, and then carve the block into a spoon?
