I need to make a large cove molding for the base-to-waist sections of a grandfather clock. The radius will be approx. 2-3”. I haven’t figured the exact size yet. The cove will be cut on the table saw out of solid walnut. I then plan to apply figured walnut veneer to the face of the cove so it matches the rest of the clock. The molding stock will not be a flat board with a cove. It will start out as a triangular piece of stock and the long side will have the cove milled in it.

I wasn’t planning on veneering the other two sides that will be glued to the base and waist of the clock. My questions is will there be any long term problems (warping, twisting) with the veneer applied only to the cove? I could veneer all sides if required.

Second question, what is the best way to vacuum press a cove. I was thinking of a canvas sand bag make to fit the cove as a caul.

Thanks all,
Dan

PS. Darryl, Will you cover this technique of veneering in Oct. at CFC?

Dan,

You don't need to veneer the edges that are buried but you should veneer the back to keep the molding in its same shape, otherwise the cove's radius will get tighter as it cups in that direction.

I'd be happy to cover this in the advanced class. I was planning on leaving some time open for things the students would like to see demonstrated.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Dan:

If you'd like to see it done, veneering a cove is demonstrated and explained in Darryl's 2nd video "Working in a Vacuum" at www.vacupress.com

I recommend the video without reservation
