Subject : Vacuum Pump Problem

I purchased a new 6TA compressed air vacuum pump last summer along with a 5x10 flip-top table. Great setup! I was able to press some large 2'x8' countertops easily. (Sorry, could not get a decent picture.)

Now I am having a problem with the vacuum pump. This problem surfaced a number of months ago, but I haven't had any call to use the press again until today. Also, since the last time I used the press, I replaced my air compressor for additional capacity. I thought that this may have also solved my vacuum pump problem.

Here is a description of what happens.

1) Close the flip-top table.
2) Turn on the vacuum pump using the valve on the back of the pump. I have about 123 PSI being supplied via a 50' 3/8" ID hose. I believe the fittings are 1/4". The compresser is brand new and rated at 12.6 SCFM.
3) The air is evacuated and the gauge reads 25".
4) The pump shuts off.
5) The pressure slowly drops to 20" and the pump turns itself on.
6) The air being discharged does NOT sound as loud as it did during the original draw-down.
7) The vacuum gauge slowly reads lower and lower readings, down to 5" after a few minutes. The air pressure gauge reads about 110 PSI during this phase.

Now, here is something that may help:

8) I turn the valve OFF then immediately back ON.
9) The air being discharged definitely sounds louder.
10) The vacuum gauge quickly returns to 25" and the pump shuts off properly.
11) Then, the whole process returns to step #5 above.

The bottom line is that I cannot leave the pump unattended. Every few minutes I need to close and open the air supply valve. Obviously, this is not the pump design intent.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Charles

Sounds like you shuttle valve that controls the flow of compressed air may be sticking a little bit. Give us a call and we can trouble shoot it for you. 207-725-0935

Darryl,

As a follow-up to this, I would like to say thank you very much.

Here is what happened.

I gave a call to your shop where someone walked me through some trouble-shooting steps. After we narrowed the problem down, I was given the option of sending the unit back for warranty repair. I took this option.

I shipped the unit via insured UPS, your shop received it, replaced a part, and immediately sent it back. It works GREAT!

I am very, very pleased with the service and professionalism I experienced in resolving this issue. I am very glad that one of my fellow cabinetmakers recommended your organization to me a few years ago.

Sincerely,

Charles
