Dean,
You can veneer raised panels in a vacuum press but its definitely not a production operation.
First, the raised part cannot have the usual 1/8" step at the top since the veneer will not tuck into that notch. Second, if it is a radius sweep the raise needs to be somewhat shallow. To get the veneer to conform at the corners you massage this area right through the bag. Before putting the panel in the bag very lightly wet the surface of the veneer at the four corners, slide the panel into the bag with no cover sheet on top and draw down the vacuum until it just begins to squeeze the panel and bend the veneer downward. Take a small wallpaper roller and begin massaging the veneer at the corners right through the bag. Turn on the pump for a second or two and repeat the rolling process again. Do this on/off technique three or four times or until the veneer is drawn down tight and well conformed.
Some veneers do this easier than others so I would do a test run or two to get the feel of it.
Hope this explanation made sense.
Sincerely
Darryl Keil
