Subject : How smooth does veneer need to be to be properly glued?

I have what might be a silly question. I have been using Unibond and a veneer press to glue my own sawn veneer. After bandsawing the veneer, I have been running both sides of the veneer through my woodmaster drum sander to clean up the surface with 120 grit paper. My question is do I really need to clean up the side that will be glued to the substrate?

Robert,

I don't think 120 grit is necessary on the glue side, 80 grit would be fine. As far as the bandsawn surface with no sanding, that's hard for me to say without seeing the boards as it comes off your band saw.

Personally I would lean to at least some sanding, even if it doesn't completely remove all of the band saw marks.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
