Subject : crotch walnut tombstone raised panels

I have some tombstone raised panels that I want to make. I though rather than resawing the walnut crotch stock to net 5/8 inch thickness and raise the panel I would resaw the crotch stock into 3/32 thick veneer and apply the veneer over a glued up walnut panel 7/16 thick on both sides of the panel (net 5/8), then raise as usual.

Is this approach viable?

Robert,

Your idea may work but the crotch has a much different grain direction up the center than the core walnut will and you may have some cracking in the crotch area. It would be better to lay it up on MDF but I understand the visual problems with the raised portion. You could mitre solid around the edges but the grain direction wont be like solid.

If you are in a part of the country that doesn't have full on heating in the winter you may get away with your idea. No guarantees on this one. If you do go this way see if you can get the resawn veneer thinner. Maybe sand it down to 1/16" once its glued to the core.

Sincerely

Darryl,

Thanks for your reply, the final home for the tombstone panel furniture is Pennsylvania, so your concern about possible cracking seems like it would apply.

If I attempt this approach, I will bring the veneer down to 1/16 instead of 3/32, should be easy enought to do.

Thanks for your help
