Subject : how to make Paperback

Hi,

I have some very nice vavone burl on paper and I whant to use it with some other veneer on a table top witch are not paperback. Is anyone of you have ever made your own paperback veneer.
Is there a good way to do so...??

JP,

You can buy the 10mil backing that is used in paperbacked veneer and apply it to your raw veneer. It will not be quite the same as the commercial paperbacked veneer which has been tenderized and pre-sanded. Yours will be stiffer and probably just a touch thicker.

Personally I would glue the raw veneer down without any backing next to the paperbacked material, especially if the raw veneer is about the same thickness.

Just a warning about paper back. I had sever peices of paperback Oak that I Seemed together with gum tape and used pva glue in the vac press. Later I removed the parts from the press and removed the gum tape, let dry for several days, and noticed there were depresions whereever the tape had been. No way to sand them out. Called Daryl for explanation. He theorized that the paper had absorbed moisture and swelled to the same level as the tape under the cauls.This was several years ago and the depressions remain. I don't know if a different adhesive would do the same thing.
