I am about to purchase a VacuPress system. I saw one of these systems in operation and I am sold.

While I am thinking about the veneering capabilities for the projects I've made with larger flat surfaces, the immediate need I am preparing for is the construction of 2 to 4 exterior doors for my new house. I have an acquantance who makes higher-end custom doors and he uses a laminated pine substrate. I noticed the honeycomb material on the VacuPress website and wondered about that material as exterior door substrate? Is it an appropriate material for this purpose? I read the posting on honeycomb and see that sheets can be glued together to get more thickness. Does the honeycomb add enough weight to give the right "feel" for a door?

Roger:

I expect that exterior doors have insulation in their core, which honeycomb would not provide. For security purposes, you'd have to use perhaps 1/2" thick plywood or similar on the outside, and for balancing purposes the same on the inside, which wouldn't leave a lot of room for the honeycomb. If you need the ability to veneer the skins you could purchase unpainted slab wood doors and apply veneer to them. I'd suggest looking for an inexpensive damaged door and experiment first, especially with a finish that could withstand the elements and sun. Good luck!

Roger,

Even though I'm a real fan honeycomb I too would not use it for the core of an exterior door. Would definitely give it a light "hollow core" feel whenever you shut it. Let it be solid core construction.

Sincerely
