Subject : removal of old veneer

My dad has a friend with an old desk with a torn up veneered top he wants to remove and re-veneer. He estimates the desk is at least 50 years old. What is the best guess of adhesive used - hide glue? If so, is heat the way to soften it for removal? If no go, is water the next thing to try, or a solvent?
Thanks.

What I would do in your situation, is remove the top of the desk, and take it to a shop that has a wide belt sander. That way the top layer of veneer can be removed, leaving a surface that's smooth, clean, and ready for re-veneering.

You should also check the bottom to see if it is balanced, and possibly sand that if needed as well..

Hope this helps

Dave,

If you cant get the top off as Gregory suggested, which I would think you could, then put a household iron to it and see if the veneer lossens. If its hide glue it will lift up, if not then you will have to sand it off in place.

Sincerely
