Subject : Veneer face down on platen?

To All:

What are the hazaards and pitfalls that might occur when one places the veneer face down onto the platen? Using this method allows one to dispense with a caul, but are there any trade offs? I'm assuming that the platen is clean and smooth, that is, no glue or grit that might impress into the veneer.

Jeff,

You can veneer face down but you dont want to do it right against the platen. The platen has grooves in it that the glue will migrate to and show a raised grid work of lines on your veneered panel. You must have a caul between your veneer and the platen. This does mean that one caul will be fine for all sizes of panel, just be sure the panel is close to one edge of this caul so the air from around the panel can get out to the platen grooves.

The other thing to be aware of with one sided pressing is you really have to go immediately back in and press the back side so your panel doesnt warp. You cant press one side and then wait a day to press the other.

Sincerely

Hi, Jeff

That is the technique that I use most of the time. The down side is that you can only veneer one face at a time. That is offset (in my estimation) by the fact that you don't have to cut a different size caul for every different size panel you press. It may take a bit more time, but if you're not doing high production work that's not a biggie.
