This is a response to some excellent questions about trimming veneer with the Fein Multimaster. The question was a bit buried in another thread so I brought it out here.

Darryl, Richard

In the past, I have always used a router to trim up and provide clean edges before taping. How does the Multimaster compare? Do you use one over the other now? Any more info you can provide regarding the use the Multimaster for edging veneer would be a great help.

Thanks in advance,

Michael Lomax

Michael,

I like a combination of both methods. The router jig allows me to trim a whole stack of veneer in one pass, very good for radial matches. The down side is it can be chippy on some ornery veneers. Not very often but it does happen.

What I like about the Multimaster is its totally chip free. I dont care how fragile the veneer is the Multimaster always cuts cleanly. Its down side is the router jigs upside, it doesn't cut through a whole stack of veneer in one pass. Every time you have to make another pass it's a chance for operator error and I find the blade can wander a bit the deeper you go. I will say there is a harder tempered blade that may not do that but I only have the regular one at this point.

Thats why I use both.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

When using the multimaster, is there a backer behind the piece of veneer being cut or is there a slot for the blade to run in?

Lomax,

There is a 3/4" board underneath and you just end up with a groove as you use the jig.
