I'm looking at a stacked construction that gets veneered on both sides, mahogany on mahogany. I'd like to go straight to the veneer, no crossband, as the edges get rounded. I can sand through the veneer and glue line and work out any visibility issues with the finish.
My feeling in this situation is that crossbanding is asking for trouble. The piece is 20" wide and I see no need to try to constrain 2" thick stock with a couple layers of crossband (inside and out).
I've only seen one piece where this was done. It was a ~300 year old marquetry table with sawn (thick) veneered top. Parts were separating. Frankly, if I can make it through only 250 years I will be happy Does anyone have any real experience with this issue? FWIW, the piece is heading to the Florida coast from upstate New York.
