I see burl clad steering wheels and curved dashes advertised in all my car magazines. How on earth are they getting the wood all the way around the wheel and wrapped around the curved pieces without it splitting or wrinkeling? Any insight will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I recently considered adding a molded burlwood dash kit to my corvette. I found out in the case of the molded kits, it is not real wood.

Ed,

One of my customers uses our equipment to wrap veneer around steering wheels. When he told me he was doing this, I said "no way". He explained his process, I tried it and it worked.

You will notice that walnut burl is the most common veneer used in cars. Believe it or not, walnut burl is just about the easiest wood to mold around compound shapes. Second the veneer needs to be slightly wetted before molding. Last, massaging the veneer right through the vacuum bag as it's being pulled down assists in getting it to conform quite well.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
