I have been reading about a staging portion of a vaccum pump ? can anyone expound on this for me ?

Keith,

I am not quite sure what you are refering to around "staging" but there are two stage vacuum pumps if this is what you mean. The first stage takes out the bulk of the air and the second stage takes out the rest. It doesnt have much relevance for vacuum pressing since you dont need super high vacuum or super fast evacuation and very high efficiency is not all that important unless you have many pumps that are running constantly.

If you need more information I need more clarification.

I've seen references to the same concept when individuals use a shop vac to draw down most of the air from a large pressing and then use the Vacuum pump to pull down to working pressure. As I've only done flat pieces to date, it's not been an issue for me and, as you've mentioned elsewhere, the slower pumping has helped me several times by giving me time to shift pieces back into alignment as the bag moves.
