Subject : veneer both sides?

Watching the video and reading the archives of this forum, I see that it is recommended to veneer both sides of the panel. I have a couple questions on that;

1. Is that only for thinner work with 1/4" or so substrate?

2. Is that only for MDF or for plywood also?

3. With 3/4" thick MDF or plywood do you have to do both sides?

Thanks

Tom

One answer will cover all three of your questions...

Veneer the back of everything, regardless of thickness, or what material you are using. When you add adhesive to only one side, you change the properties for that side to take on moisture, and it will react differently than the other side....

THAT BEING SAID.....I know that there are some exceptions to this rule, but I'm pretty sure that it never applies to flat panels.....

I think that you can veneer only side when you are doing circular tubes...I'll let Darryl or someone else give you the authorative word on that part, since I'm not sure, and haven't done much but flat panels.....

Tom,

What Brian said is my rule as well, I always veneer both sides no matter what the thickness or material.

Because glues shrink,some more than others, veneering both sides provides equal pull balancing the panel. Of course some panels that are fixed inside a frame or very small one will warp very little so I suppose you could get away with it in some cases. Because its not much more effort to veneer both sides I just make it a policy.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
