I have quite a bit of bleed thru on a large white oak veneer panel. I may have gotten a little heavy with the unibond 800. I usually use a 1/8 notched trowel but tried a foam roller this time. I have sanded quite a bit with 150 grit, but have not tried a scaper.
Anyway, my question is- Since White oak is so porous, and I am afraid of sanding thru,Could I seal the top with a seal coat of shellac and then apply my mission style finish?
Or should I try a scraper first?
I just have to ruin such a large panel.
Thanks
Dave

Dave,

You've really got to get that bleed through off or you will most likely have a blotchy look when applying the finish. No way can you remove Unibond with 150 grit paper. I always start with a scraper especially with a lot of bleed through.

You can be a lot more aggresive than you think without going through. Let me make a suggestion. Glue up another small piece of your oak veneer and use it to get the feel of how much scraping and sanding you can do. In fact, scrape and sand until you do go through. This will give you a much better sense of how much you can safely remove.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

D-
I forgot to mention that this qtr sawn white oak veneer if it makes any difference. I tried the scaper and seem to get most of it. Odd tho, the bleed thru seems to be in the rays of the white oak, and I always thought they were the harder part of the wood.

Thanks
Dave
