Subject : foam core panels

Anyone ever work with foam cores? I am about to start on a behemoth of a table, and I stated a concern to my client regarding weight and stability. I mentioned the honeycomb cores I have read about, but this man has a background as a naval architect, and he steered me toward a foam core product. This product is called Divinycell, made by a company called DIAB. I am told that you can face this product with 1/4" skins and produce lightweight panels that will be very rigid. I have studied the technical data from the manufacturer, but I have not talked with a woodworker who has first hand knowledge of this sort of product. Any offerings? Thank you kindly!

My experience is very limited, but positive. I too have looked for a lightweight solution for large panels. Shipping the honeycomb core material to my location is expensive so not very appealing to me. I have made test panels using common styrofoam building insulation with good success. The key is to get the right adhesive. Once that is achieved, any core that will not collapse will serve. In looking at the divinycell website, it appears that their product is a good one. I especially like the foam product that is cross-scored.....it gets my mind to thinking of possibilities. I didn't see any reference to recommended glues on their site, so I would (and I will, later) call them and ask to chat with a tech person.

Building the table with a product that is recommended by a client will be a PR bonus for you. I, for one, would like to hear of your results on this project.

Another good option would be to use balsa core. the price is cheaper the grain is running the short direction through the panels and the blocks are scored, and scrimmed. It is avalible in thickness from 3/16 to 1-1/2". I use a thickened epoxy for the glue-up.
One of my suppliers is has a light-weight MDF now, although i'm not sure about 1/4".
I don't have time to say more now. I'm setting up a show that openbs tomorrow. go to www.fgci.com . Fiberglass Coatings inc. and look around.
