I am in the process of jointing and stitching about 16 4x8 panels of purple heart. Too bad I took the deposit!

The problem I am having is that the veneer I purchased from Certainly Wood is buckled. Not horribly but it sure as hell isnt flat! When jointing it I can get a fairly straight line but when stitching up the panel, the panel gets all lumpy becuase the jointed edge is not quite 100% due to the fact that when jointing I cannot exert enough pressure to get the material 100% flat.

So my question is this. If I get someone with a commercial gulliotine to slice it for me, will the panel be flat when I stitch it?

Thanks,
Douglas Vincent

Douglas,

You will have a true straight edge but that doesnt mean it will be easy to tape up. A gulliotine will give you a tight edge when stitched but it wont make the veneer flat. You may want to add some temporary pieces of masking tape to the back side before stitching to help it go better.

I have also found that purple heart can be less than a pleasure to work with.

Douglas, I struggled for years with jointing veneer, and spent loads of time and money trying to find a foolproof method. Then one night on this forum someone steered me to the Fein Multimaster oscillating sander/saw. It will cut veneer with absolutely NO tearing whatsoever. If you try this you will be delighted. I use it to rip, crosscut, cut angles, lay up sunbursts, any species, figure type...it works.
