Flattened 18 12" x 39" burl sheets last Tuesday morning. I brushed on the flattening solution very heavy, and re-brushed before assembling with screen and newspaper. Changed paper per guidelines. Friday morning I changed paper again and instead of clamping simply weighted the sheets with 3/4" ply and 3 jugs of sand. Friday afternoon was examining the sheets and noticed they had started to take on wrinkles again, so replaced the weight with clamps. Spent about 30 min Saturday planning cuts, and noticed that the sheets again taking on wrinkles when loose stacked.

How thoroughly should the sheets initially be soaked with the flattening solution?

As they continue drying the sheets are getting to be as stiff as when I bought them. Is this to be expected?

Why would the sheets be trying to develop wrinkles again?

How would a production shop handle 15-20 sheets to be flattened? Do they dip and soak, ...?

Hope the trade show was enjoyable. Thanks for your time.

Don

Don,

You probably over saturated the veneer. I never apply addition solution after the intial soaking. With a few extra applications of the newspaper you may have been fine. As long as the veneer has too much moisture it will attempt to wrinkle. As it dries it will return to being stiff, even more so because of the glue in the flattening solution.

In production situations they usually flatten veneer with a hot press. Very nice solution if you have $20,000.

Sincerely

Thanks for the information. The veneer feels very dry, but I am still changing paper daily just in case. I hope to book match and glue up tomorrow.

The 3 hole tape did remain on the veneer, and did prevent cracks from progressing further during all the handling. Doesn't look like I will be able to pull together any of the cracks, but at least no further damage.

One short cut was leaving the screening in a long roll. I needed about 130' of screening 16" wide for veneer sheets 39" long. Rather than cut the screening into 39"x16" pieces, I bought a partial roll 45' x 4' and cut into three rolls 45' x 16". I simply unrolled and looped the screening back and forth as I built the "sandwich" and rolled it back up each time I disassembled. It seemed no slower than working with individual pieces of screen, and the screen can be used again and again regardless of the length of the veneer.
