Subject : Flattening Partially Broken Veneer - Taping Possible?
Posted : 2004-04-19 9:36 PM
Post #31464

Need to flatten some burl veneer that has one corner almost broken off of several sheets. I'd like to try to hold everything together while flattening, rather than having to keep track of pieces and parent sheets. I'm wondering if three hole veneer would allow sufficient flattening solution to reach the taped areas, and whether the flattening solution would cause the tape to loosen and fall off. Any experience with this?

I don't think the solution would loosen the veneer, since it's primarily water.

I would make sure to let the solution penetrate well through the underside....where there's no tape.

Let me know what happens...it's a good question.

Don,

It will be rather difficult to flatten your veneer and have your broken pieces fit properly without a crack line afterwards. The veneer moves too much during flattening to deal with any cracks or seperate pieces, and the three hole veneer tape will not do the job. About the only thing I can think of is to edge glue your problem area with epoxy or polyurethane glue which the flattening solution will not affect.

Sincerely
