I just made my first panel using my vacuum press (joewoodworker plans). The panel came out of the press (1 hr press time) looking perfect, both sides of 5/8" mdf done using BetterBond cold press veneer glue spread using a nothced spreader. I hung the panel to dry, but within 20 minutes huge ridges started to appear in the veneer - some 1/2" high and 20 inches long (always running with the grain, and more toward the center of the 11x32" panel). I cut one open, and there seems to be a nice even layer of glue right under the ridge, no excess, no gaps. The veneer was very flat when it went into the press, and had no visible defects when I took it out of the press.

hey tom - was wondering if you used any cardboard in the veneer "sandwich" - i used to make up the package with the substrate, veneer, wax paper, cardboard, and then the platen. frequently found ridges and finally figured out it was the corrugated cardboard that caused them - stopped using it and stopped getting the ridges. hope this helps.

Tom,

What you describe sounds like you took the panel out too soon. It happened to me exactly the way you described, on an ebony veneer panel no less. It looked fine for about 10 minutes and then the huge ridges suddenly appeared, I wanted to cry. Shouldnt have used yellow glue on ebony anyway. It was way back when I was just learning.

When the moisture in the glue has not absorbed into the veneer enough and especially the substrate, the bond will not hold when released from pressure. A couple of hours should have done the trick. I would also say, you probably used a bit too much glue since an hour should have been relatively enough time, although a couple hours plays it safe. The more glue you use the longer it takes for the water in the glue to be pulled away from the glue line. All that moisture tries to swell the veneer so the veneer is desperately trying to expand. The ridges were just the swelled veneer attempting to go somewhere, and up was the only way it had. You also didnt mention what kind of veneer you were using. Some kinds are worse around swelling than others and some need more set time.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
