Recently I was asked to make a replacement desk top using cherry veneer. The existing top had a molded edge that was stepped in at the top one half inch so I could not comply with the one quarter inch guideline. I was also asked to replace the two pull out writing shelves, each of which had a groove in the bottom that extended back almost on inch from the edge, again requiring solid edging more than one quarter inch wide. To minimize the chance of joint telegraphing through the veneer, at Darryl's suggestion I used two ply veneer. It was more work, and required twice the veneer, but allowed me to violate the one quarter inch guideline with some confidence.
