Subject : Veneering over edge banding

I’ve read in a couple of posts that if you are going to veneer over soled edge banding the banding should not be more than 1/4 inch thick. Can anyone explain why?

Also does this rule apply to edge banding both parallel and perpendicular to the grain of the veneer.

thanks

Howard

Howard,

The wider the edge banding the more the movement. This movement can telegraph through the veneer which you may notice. Its not so much that you will have serious problems, mostly just visual with the possibility of some fissuring in the veneer. This applies both with and across the grain.

Sincerely

Recently I was asked to make a replacement desk top using cherry veneer. The existing top had a molded edge that was stepped in at the top one half inch so I could not comply with the one quarter inch guideline. I was also asked to replace the two pull out writing shelves, each of which had a groove in the bottom that extended back almost on inch from the edge, again requiring solid edging more than one quarter inch wide. To minimize the chance of joint telegraphing through the veneer, at Darryl's suggestion I used two ply veneer. It was more work, and required twice the veneer, but allowed me to violate the one quarter inch guideline with some confidence.
