Subject : Veneering on solid wood with opposite grain direction

Although I've veneered on solid wood drawer fronts with the same grain direction without a problem, I've never had too in the opposite direction - until now. I want to veneer on a solid cherry apron and drawer front that is 4" wide and ~12 inches long some quilted Makore with the grain running in the opposite direction. Will the breating of the Cherry end up causing a problem with the veneer down the road on such a small piece? Also, do I need to add a backer on these solid wood pieces?

Thanks for your help.

Brian,

Your solid is not that wide so I really dont see much of a problem down the road. I would apply a backer grade veneer under the face veneer for insurance sake. Apply it 90 degrees to the face veneer.

Brian, I make a table using 8/4 soft maple veneered with rosewood. It's approx. 14"x42". I make a 5 ply sandwich. I glue mahogany front and back with the grain and then glue the rosewood crosswise approx 30 degrees to that. I've never had a vener failure or splitting from wood movement, and soft maple moves a lot. I would 5 ply it and it should be bullet proof then.
