Subject : finding pinholes in vacuum bags

Hi Darryl,

I suspect I may have a pinhole in the bag I'm using (its always held vacuum for an hour or better, but today I have to pull it down every 5-20 minutes!). Is there an easy way to find it? I've given it a semi-thorough once-over and can't see anything, but thought you might have a trick.

Thanks

Mickey

Mickey,

5-20 minutes isn't so bad. I've used bags that made the pump go every 30 seconds or so.
More likely, the problem is with the closure system. Make sure you have no dust, etc., in that area, and that you fold it over evenly. Try wiping the closure area with a wet sponge and leave it wet. If that helps, you've isolated the problem.
I've found holes by spraying the bag with water tinted with food coloring or other dye. The water seeps in when the pressure is on. But that method may not work with really small holes, which yours would be if it really is a hole.

Mickey,

Like Thomas said, 5 to 20 minutes is not bad, in fact its completely fine. I wouldnt even look for a leak at that amount of cycle time. Leaks that would make a pump come on every 5 minutes or more are very difficult to find.

The one thing I am not clear on is if your pump is an automatic cycling type. I'm gathering its not. If thats the case I would recommend coverting it over to self cycling so the shorter cycle time wont really be an issue.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
