Subject : Using English Sycamore

I'm considering using Quilted English Sycamore for a marquetry piece I'm working on, and am only marginally familiar with the properties of this veneer. I'm specifically concerned with glue bleed through since it is so white even the Unibond white catalyst could cause a yellow staining problem.

Can anyone provide me with their experience with this veneer - what to watch out for, marquetry uses (along side other veneers etc.), and glue bleed through options?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I once heard that English sycamore is very similiar to maple, close grain.
So I would think the white should work just fine.
If in doubt test a small piece.

Brian,

Like Mike said, a simple test will tell you most of want you need to know. In general a small amount of bleed through will not affect the veneer as long as you scrape and sand all of it off. If you have a lot of bleed through that could be a problem. This is where a sample would come in handy to get the feel of glue amount and double checking for any staining of the veneer.

If you want to completely eliminate the possibility of any bleed through you could size the veneer with 4 parts water to 1 part yellow or white glue. You would have to go through the standard flattening process to do this. Search this forum for "how to flatten veneer" to get a full description. Search with only "subject" checked for this specific post.

Sincerely
