Darryl: A person that stopped in today is re-doing an early 20th century pool table. Legs are square hollow columns of 1.5" chestnut. He patched in some oak strips on the corners, replaced one board completely with 1.5" oak, the chestnut has some cracks, split knots. Originally it was veneered with about 1/16" thick oak but that is all gone. He would prefer a single layer of quartered red oak veneer, I have suggested a two ply over the boards. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Don,

I would definately two ply it. With the patching, knots, and splits a single layer of veneer will not hold up well in my opinion. If the veneer was resawn at a 1/16" as the original was, then one layer would be fine, but if its standard commercial veneer it will have to be backed. I usually dont recommend two ply over solid but the legs cant be that wide so it sould be fine. Another option is to two ply in the same direction which is not quite as good as two ply at 90 degrees but its still much better than a single layer. This way the veneer can move with the expansion and contraction of the solid wood.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

The pool table legs are 7.5" on a side, 30" long, originally made of 4 1.5" x 6" x 30" boards. Some of the boards have tight knots with a central check through the knot, or splits up to 1/16" wide. After repairs with red oak, the owner had the legs wide belt sanded smooth. Some of the checks and worm holes still have the original white putty filler, some of the splits are unfilled. My apologies for not being more explicit in my original post. Thanks again.
