Subject : best veneer backing?

I am new to veneering and wish to build some hopefully durable furniture. I see many sites selling 4'x8' sheets of paper-backed veneer, but it seems that alot of people have negative comments on paper-backed material, specifically with regard to its tendency to delaminate. So, exactly what is the VERY BEST backing material to use, say, in a vacuum press system, using UF or PVA type glues? And, what is the best way to avoid bleed through using such a system? Is it o.k. to use the paper-backed stuff with a white or yellow glue? Will this mitigate the delamination concern?
TIA,
Woody

I'll defer to the experts to answer your basic questions. Like you, I was very concerned about bleed through affecting finishing. Having pressed several panels now (that had bleed through) with no finishing problems, I'm not concerned.

My guess is that the bleed through action is adhesive migrating to the surface of the veneer through pores, invisible cracks, ... and then spreading out on the surface of the veneer. Routine sanding/scraping has always removed the dried glue completely.

Of course, paper-backed veneer is so thin that I wouldn't even want to use a random orbit sander lightly with 240 grit finishing paper.

My goal is to develop some confidence and ability with decorative veneering, such as starburst and diamond patterns, and so paper-backed was not an option. And if you visit a couple web sites like www.certainlywood.com and www.wood-veneers.com you'll quickly see that there are an amazing selection of wood species and figures in raw veneers. Darryl's first video gave me all the knowledge and confidence I needed to start successfully jointing and pressing simple slip and book matches.

Good luck

Woody,

Paper backed veneer is really fine to use. My guess is that all the negative information you have heard about delamiantion is not with the paper to the veneer but from using contact cement to glue the paper backed veneer to the substrate. Since you will be using a vacuum press you will use better glues than contact cement which is where the problem is. In my opinion paper backed veneers are a great way to get your feet wet with the veneering process and make some pretty nice stuff.

As Ron said in his post, the finest results are usually achieved with raw veneer. You get to choose the finest veneers, combine and match them as you choose and have at least some amount of material that you can sand. The down side to raw veneer is you have to cut, match and tape yourself and you do get bleed through. This is why I say paper backed veneer is a good place to start. If you are real ambitious, go for the raw veneer.

With paper backed veneer you can use white or yellow glue as well as urea resin glue.

Good luck.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
